2017 Golden Globes – Who Should/Will Win
Tonight is the 74th annual Golden Globe awards. The Globes are somewhat a precursor to the Oscars, giving us a glimpse as to where the voting might land. But mostly, the Globes are a huge party and love big stars and big movies. Here are my predictions of who will win, as well as my choice of who should win tonight at the 2017 Golden Globes.
I’m only picking the movie categories, as I don’t watch enough T.V. to warrant an opinion.
BEST ORIGINAL SONG
- “CAN’T STOP THE FEELING” – TROLLS
- “CITY OF STARS” – LA LA LAND
- “FAITH” – SING
- “GOLD” – GOLD
- “HOW FAR I’LL GO” – MOANA
Could this be the start of the La La Land sweep? It’s possible. But with Justin Timberlake accepting the award, they’ll reward him just on star power (and the song is awesome, too).
WILL WIN – “CAN’T STOP THE FEELING” – TROLLS
SHOULD WIN – “CAN’T STOP THE FEELING” – TROLLS
BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
- ARRIVAL
- LION
- LA LA LAND
- MOONLIGHT
- HIDDEN FIGURES
I loved Arrival’s haunting score, but the music is the heartbeat of La La Land.
WILL WIN – LA LA LAND
SHOULD WIN – LA LA LAND
BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
- DIVINES
- ELLE
- NERUDA
- THE SALESMAN
- TONI ERDMANN
Seeing as Elle is the only film in this category with another nomination (Best Actress – Drama), and it’s a great movie, I expect it to pick up the win here.
WILL WIN – ELLE
SHOULD WIN – ELLE
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
- KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS
- MOANA
- MY LIFE AS A ZUCCHINI
- SING
- ZOOTOPIA
A lot of good choices here, even with the omission of Finding Dory. It’s close between Zootopia, Moana, and Kubo, and I think (and hope) the two Disney products will cancel each other out for a Kubo victory.
WILL WIN – KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS
SHOULD WIN – KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS
BEST SCREENPLAY
- LA LA LAND
- NOCTURNAL ANIMALS
- MOONLIGHT
- MANCHESTER BY THE SEA
- HELL OR HIGH WATER
This one is tough. I would love to see a Hell or High Water win here, but I doubt that would happen. I’m going with the heartbreaking Manchester by the Sea on this one, though La La Land and Moonlight could grab it, as well.
WILL WIN – MANCHESTER BY THE SEA
SHOULD WIN – HELL OR HIGH WATER
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
- VIOLA DAVIS – FENCES
- NAOMI HARRIS – MOONLIGHT
- NICOLE KIDMAN – LION
- OCTAVIA SPENCER – HIDDEN FIGURES
- MICHELLE WILLIAMS – MANCHESTER BY THE SEA
Much like Ali, Davis has been winning all year and doesn’t look to stop. Williams could play spoiler, but I doubt it.
WILL WIN – VIOLA DAVIS – FENCES
SHOULD WIN – MICHELLE WILLIAMS – MANCHESTER BY THE SEA
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
- MAHERSHALA ALI – MOONLIGHT
- JEFF BRIDGES – HELL OR HIGH WATER
- SIMON HELBERG – FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS
- AARON TAYLOR-JOHNSON – NOCTURNAL ANIMALS
- DEV PATEL – LION
Ali’s been winning all year, so why stop now?
WILL WIN – MAHERSHALA ALI – MOONLIGHT
SHOULD WIN – MAHERSHALA ALI – MOONLIGHT
BEST ACTRESS – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
- ANNETTE BENING – 20TH CENTURY WOMEN
- LILY COLLINS – RULES DON’T APPLY
- HAILEE STEINFELD – THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN
- EMMA STONE – LA LA LAND
- MERYL STREEP – FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS
Tough competition with some veterans in Streep and Bening, but bet the house on Emma Stone, who will probably give one of the night’s best speeches.
WILL WIN – EMMA STONE – LA LA LAND
SHOULD WIN – EMMA STONE – LA LA LAND
BEST ACTOR – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
- COLIN FARREL – THE LOBSTER
- RYAN GOSLING – LA LA LAND
- HUGH GRANT – FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS
- JONAH HILL – WAR DOGS
- RYAN REYNOLDS – DEADPOOL
Gosling is the frontrunner by a mile. But I would love, absolutely LOVE to see the other Ryan get the W.
WILL WIN – RYAN GOSLING – LA LA LAND
SHOULD WIN – RYAN REYNOLDS – DEADPOOL
BEST ACTRESS – DRAMA
- AMY ADAMS – ARRIVAL
- JESSICA CHASTAIN – MISS SLOANE
- ISABELLE HUPPERT – ELLE
- RUTH NEEGA – LOVING
- NATALIE PORTMAN – JACKIE
Adams had a great year with Arrival and Nocturnal Animals, but Portman is remarkable as Jackie Kennedy and this could be her first step to Oscar gold.
WILL WIN – NATALIE PORTMAN – JACKIE
SHOULD WIN – NATALIE PORTMAN – JACKIE
BEST ACTOR – DRAMA
- CASEY AFFLECK – MANCHESTER BY THE SEA
- JOEL EDGERTON – LOVING
- ANDREW GARFIELD – HACKSAW RIDGE
- VIGGO MORTENSEN – CAPTAIN FANTASTIC
- DENZEL WASHINGTON – FENCES
This is a battle between Affleck and Washington, both of whom deserve it. Affleck has been riding high for a year now, since Sundance, and looks to keep riding high.
WILL WIN – CASEY AFFLECK – MANCHESTER BY THE SEA
SHOULD WIN – CASEY AFFLECK – MANCHESTER BY THE SEA
BEST DIRECTOR
- DAMIEN CHAZELLE – LA LA LAND
- TOM FORD – NOCTURNAL ANIMALS
- MEL GIBSON – HACKSAW RIDGE
- BARRY JENKINS – MOONLIGHT
- KENNETH LONERGAN – MANCHESTER BY THE SEA
Could this be the Mel Gibson comeback story? Could Barry Jenkins continue his remarkable run with Moonlight? A lot of great stories here, but I don’t think the HFPA will resist the technicolor mastery that is La La Land.
WILL WIN – DAMIEN CHAZELLE – LA LA LAND
SHOULD WIN – DAMIEN CHAZELLE – LA LA LAND
BEST PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
- 20TH CENTURY WOMEN
- DEADPOOL
- FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS
- LA LA LAND
- SING STREET
I would jump for joy if Deadpool pulled this out. But, La La Land racked up the most nominations and will rack up the most wins, topping it off with a Best Picture win.
WILL WIN – LA LA LAND
SHOULD WIN – LA LA LAND
BEST PICTURE – DRAMA
- HACKSAW RIDGE
- HELL OR HIGH WATER
- LION
- MANCHESTER BY THE SEA
- MOONLIGHT
This is the toughest category to pick. Is it a two horse race between critical darlings Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight? Could they reward Mel Gibson’s comeback? Could Hell or High Water surprise? I don’t even know
WILL WIN – MOONLIGHT
SHOULD WIN – MANCHESTER BY THE SEA
